Broward County Charter School Employee Sheldon McDonald was arrested on December 7 for allegedly performing oral sex on a 15-year-old boy.
McDonald, 34, taught math in grades 6 to 8 at Everest Charter School. He was charged with promoting sexual performance of a minor under 16 and was held on $5,000 bond. He has since bonded out of jail. A judge ordered him not to have any contact with minors in a private setting.
According to the arrest report, the alleged incident occurred on October 23. McDonald reportedly saw the victim walking down a street in Lauderhill and offered him a ride in his vehicle. The boy accepted and entered the car.
McDonald told the teen that he was new in the neighborhood and that he was gay. He asked the victim if he could perform a sex act on him in exchange for money, the report said. McDonald then purportedly drove to a parking lot in Tamarac where he performed oral sex on the teen and paid him $20. Afterwards, they drove to the older man’s apartment in Tamarac.
The teen told investigators that McDonald agreed to let him use his car. He took the vehicle after he received a call from his girlfriend who said she needed help with something. He was later pulled over by police while driving the vehicle with friends. The officers informed the teen that the vehicle was reported stolen and asked him how he got it. The teen told them the whole story, the report said.
Police officers went to McDonald’s apartment after talking to the teen. When he was questioned about the incident, McDonald allegedly admitted to picking up the 15-year-old and performing a sex act on him and then taking him to his apartment. He said he thought the teen was 20 years old, according to the arrest report.
McDonald told investigators that he had gone to use the bathroom and when he came back, he saw the 15-year-old driving off with his car. That was when he reported the vehicle as stolen. McDonald was arrested last week after the victim gave a sworn statement to police on November 29.
Everest Charter School sent a message to all parents notifying them that McDonald was fired after his arrest.
“Due to alleged misconduct that took place outside of the school and his private life, effectively immediately Mr. Sheldon McDonald is no longer an employee of Everest Charter School,” the school message said.
Another sex-related case involving a teacher and minors was reported in Miami-Dade on December 1. Wendell Alfredo Nibbs, who taught P.E. at Brownsville Middle School, was arrested and charged with sexual battery on a familial child. He is being held without bond. It is unclear if he has acquired the services of an attorney.
According to news sources, school board police began investigating Nibbs in two years ago after he was accused of targeting female students under 18 for sex. He was arrested after two students gave sworn statements about Nibbs’ alleged behavior. The school has since fired Nibbs.
