Andrea Schneider of Boca Raton, Florida has been arrested for her alleged involvement in a four-car crash that killed a high school senior and her grandmother.
Schneider, 21, was charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI with damage to person or property, unlawful possession of Alprazolam, and violation of probation. She was ordered held without bond. The press did not name an attorney for her.
According to Broward County police, the tragic crash occurred near the 4300 block of West Hillsboro Boulevard at approximately 6:20 p.m. on March 30. Someone driving a Dodge Avenger eastbound on Hillsboro Boulevard lost control of the vehicle, went over the center line and drove head-on into the westbound traffic.
The Dodge Avenger crashed into a Nissan Altima, a Hyundai Sonata, and a Chrysler 200. Driving the Atltima was Breanha Free-Baker, 17, with her mother, Michele Free-Baker, 40, and her grandmother, Robyn Underwood, 61, as passengers. Breanha and her grandmother were killed on impact.
Breanha’s mother and another driver, identified as Melanie Perozin were all taken to Broward Health North with non-life threatening injuries. The third driver, identified as Janis Farese, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
The driver of the Dodge Avenger was identified as Schneider. She was also taken to Broward Health North with non-critical injuries.
Investigators claim Schneider was speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. Her blood-alcohol level was reportedly above the legal limit for driving.
Cases of DUI manslaughter are not uncommon in South Florida. Just last week, Freddy Mieryteran of Miami-Dade was arrested for his alleged involvement in a DUI car crash that killed Annie Becerra.
Mieryteran, 21, was charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, and several other infractions. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to authorities, the DUI crash occurred along Kendall Drive on November 30. Mieryteran was driving a Nissan Versa east when he ran a red light at SW 122nd Avenue and collided into a vehicle at the intersection. Becerra, 23, was his passenger.
Mieryteran fled the scene on foot and was later found hiding in the bushes by police. Officers who arrived at the scene reported that Mieryteran never told them that someone else was in his vehicle. As a consequence, Becerra didn’t receive help for over an hour. She died a few days later from injuries sustained in the crash.
Police reportedly found empty beer bottles in Mieryteran’s vehicle, but he insisted that he hadn’t been drinking. A blood-alcohol test performed a few hours after the crash revealed that he had a legal amount of alcohol in his system to be driving, but the results also showed that he had cocaine, marijuana, and Xanax in his system.
