Jose Ernesto Dominguez of Miami Beach, Florida is facing DUI charges for his alleged involvement in a car crash on the MacArthur Causeway that killed Danny Iglesia and injured another.
Dominguez, 26, was charged with DUI manslaughter and DUI causing serious bodily injury. He is being held on $35,000 bond. It is unclear if he has acquired the services of an attorney.
According to the police report, the alleged DUI crash occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. July 18 on the MacArthur Causeway. Dominguez was reportedly driving a Ford Mustang at a high rate of speed when he struck a Toyota Camry.
Danny Iglesia and an unidentified passenger were in the Camry. They were both taken to an area hospital, where Iglesia was pronounced dead.
Dominguez was also hospitalized and later released. An officer who interviewed Dominguez reported that he smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot, watery eyes. Dominguez told the officer that he was speeding because he was in a hurry to meet someone, according to the report.
Dominguez consented to a blood alcohol test and submitted two blood samples, each taken an hour apart. The first sample had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .070 and the second .051, the report said. While the legal limit for drinking and driving in Illinois is .08. the police report suggests that Dominguez’s BAC might have been higher .08 at the time of the crash.
“This result revealed that the subject had a metabolism rate of approximately .02 per hour; extrapolating these results, the subject’s blood alcohol content would have been in excess of .08 at the time of the crash,” the report said, according to NBC Miami. “The totality of the circumstances revealed that the subject’s normal faculties were impaired and he could not operate a motor vehicle safely on the date and time of this crash.”
Cases of DUI manslaughter are common in South Florida. A few weeks ago, Andrea Schneider of Boca Raton was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter after she allegedly caused a car crash that killed a teenager and her grandmother.
Schneider, 21, was additionally charged with DUI with damage to person or property, violation of probation, and unlawful possession of Alprazolam. She is being held without bond.
According to Broward police, the alleged DUI crash occurred at around 6:20 p.m. March 30 in the 4300 block of West Hillsboro Boulevard. Schneider was reportedly driving a Dodge Avenger east when she lost control of her vehicle, crossed the center line, and drove into the westbound traffic.
Schneider’s vehicle crashed into three vehicles, including one driven by 17-year-old Breanha Free-Baker with her mother and grandmother as passengers. Breanha and her grandmother, identified as Robyn Underwood, were instantly killed in the collision.
Breanha’s mother, Michele Free-Baker, and one of the drivers of the other vehicles, Melanie Perozin, were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Schneider was also hospitalized with minor injuries. Her blood alcohol level was reportedly above the legal limit for driving.
