Antonio Leonard Hill of Fort Lauderdale, Florida was arrested for his alleged involvement in a high-speed collision that killed a 58-year-old Fort Lauderdale man almost a year ago.
Hill, 34, was charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving. He was booked into Broward County Jail and was ordered held on $100,100 bond. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to the arrest report, Hill is accused of crashing into a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Reginal Leon McClover. The incident occurred in the 400 block of NW 31st Avenue in Lauderhill at around 1:35 a.m. on May 12, 2018.
Hill was allegedly driving a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro and was going 70 mph on a stretch of road where the posted speed limit was 35 mph. He and another man identified as Jermaine A. Jackson, also of Fort Lauderdale, were reportedly driving to a club along Broward Boulevard. Jackson, 42, was driving a white van and was allegedly speeding at at least 50 mph, investigators said. Both men were southbound.
McClover had stopped at a stop sign on NW Fourth Street before he drove into the path of Hill’s vehicle. The Camaro crashed into McClover’s vehicle, killing him. Jackson was unable to stop his vehicle and crashed into the Camaro, the report indicates.
Hill and his passenger, identified as Travis Green, were trapped in the Camaro. They had to be extricated by fire rescue workers. All three men were taken to an area hospital for treatment, the report stated.
Police who arrived at the scene reported that both Hill and Jackson had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and they appeared lethargic. They both tested positive for alcohol and cannabis consumption, but neither has been charged with a DUI, the report said.
When questioned by police, Jackson said he was following Hill to a club in the 3100 block of Broward Boulevard after having some drinks at a Mother’s Day BBQ. Hill allegedly admitted to drinking a few beers and some whiskey, according to the report.
Hill was arrested this week for his involvement in the crash. It is unclear why it took investigators so long to take him into custody. Jackson has not yet been arrested, but he was also charged with reckless driving, court records show.
Driving under the influence is a serious problem in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) almost 30 people are killed every day in the U.S. in car crashes involving drunk drivers. In 2016 alone, DUIs resulted in over 10,000 deaths, accounting for more than a quarter of all traffic-related fatalities in the country.
