Wilson Pena of Hallandale Beach, Florida was arrested Friday for allegedly hitting Claytron Peterson from behind and leaving the scene without stopping or offering aid. Police arrested Pena, 28, after receiving an anonymous tip that led them to a damaged SUV registered under his name.
Pena face multiple charges, including driving without a license and leaving the scene of a serious accident. It is unclear if he has acquired legal representation.
According to the arrest report, the hit-and-run crash occurred after 10 p.m. on October 3 in the 100 block of NW Sixth Avenue. Surveillance footage taken from a home near the scene shows someone driving a dark-colored SUV crash into Peterson, 27, who walking along the northbound lane. The driver fled the scene without stopping to administer aid.
Peterson suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.
“The SUV struck Peterson from behind and did not stop nor did any occupants render aid,” Hallandale Beach Police Capt. Ra Shana Dabney-Donovan told the press. She said the vehicle should have a missing bumper cover and damage to the passenger’s side, and urged anyone with information to contact Hallandale Beach police.
After receiving the anonymous tip, police found the SUV in the 300 block of NW Seventh Court, less than a mile from the scene of the crash.
Another hit-and-run accident was reported in Palm Beach County last week. Handan Kabba of Boca Raton, Florida was arrested for crashing her car into another vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and then fleeing the scene of the accident. She reportedly had two children in the back seat of her vehicle at the time of the crash.
Kabba, 32, faces several charges, including child neglect, DUI, and leaving the scene of an accident. She was held at Palm Beach County Jail and was released on $6,000 bond. The press did not name a lawyer for her.
According to the arrest report, the alleged hit-and-run crash occurred after 10:30 p.m. on September 29 near the intersection of Boynton Beach Boulevard and State Road 7. Someone driving a red Nissan Altima rear-ended a vehicle and continued driving south on State Road 7. It is unclear if anyone was injured in the crash.
Police eventually found a damaged red Nissan Altima parked on the side of the road. Kabba was in the driver’s seat with two children in the back. Her relationship with the boys, aged 11 and 7, is unclear.
The officer who questioned Kabba reported noticing multiple signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, an alcoholic odor, and glassy eyes. Kabba told the officer that she was waiting for a friend to come and get her and the children, the report said.
She consented to a series of Breathalyzer tests and her results were 0.150 and 0.146, which is almost twice the legal limit for Florida (0.08).
