Elementary school teacher Alejandro Perez was arrested on March 22 for allegedly touching his female students in an inappropriate manner.
Perez, 60, taught the fifth grade at Charles R. Hadley Elementary School in Miami-Dade. He is charged with six counts of lewd and lascivious conduct on a child under 12 and another six counts of lewd and lascivious molestation on a child who is 16 or older.
Perez was ordered held without bond at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to the arrest report, at least six students have come forward claiming Perez touched them inappropriately. Students reportedly provided investigators with three separate videos taken using cellphones that showed Perez touching the victims.
Records show that Perez has been a teacher for 34 years without any prior incidents. The school district released the following statement after his arrest:
“Miami-Dade Country Public Schools has zero tolerance for employees who engage in inappropriate behavior with students,” the statement read. “As soon as the allegations came to light, the employee was removed from the school setting. Thanks to a swift and thorough investigation by the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, an arrest has been made.”
The school district is in the process of terminating Perez’s employment.
Perez’s arrest is the second case of an alleged bad teacher reported this past week. Former middle school gym teacher Wendell Nibbs was arrested last week for allegedly sexually assaulting several students when he was employed at Brownsville Middle School in Miami.
The first sexual battery charges against Nibbs were filed in 2017 when the first victim came forward with allegations. Last week, two additional victims came forward and Nibbs now faces additional sexual assault charges.
According to the arrest report, Nibbs started teaching physical education at Brownsville Middle School in 2014. The alleged sexual assaults reportedly occurred over several years spanning from 2014 to the present. So far, five former students have come forward alleging that Nibbs sexually assaulted them. The state is prosecuting three of the cases, including one in which the victim claims Nibbs is the father of her child.
The parents of the first victim to come forward filed a lawsuit earlier this year against the Miami-Dade School Board alleging that the school failed to protect their child even though there were allegations about Nibbs’ behavior with students before she went to the police.
Nibbs was initially placed under house arrest, but he was arrested again last week and is now being held without bond. Attorney information was not available.
Miami-Dade School Board spokesperson Daisy Gonzalez-Diego issued a statement last Thursday saying that the school district will provide whatever assistance investigators require to “ensure swift prosecution of the individual charged with these disturbing accusations.”
