Anthony Horsford of Lake Worth, Florida was arrested on Monday morning for his alleged involvement in a fatal hit-and-run crash.
Horsford, 62, is charged with failing to stop at a crash involving serious injury and failing to stop at the site of a fatal crash. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to news sources, Horsford’s arrest is related to the December 2018 crash that killed Paul McKee and injured his wife Alicia, both of Knoxville, Tennessee as they were walking near Quadrille Boulevard and Hibiscus Street. The McKees were with their 12-year-old son at the time of the crash. He was not injured, police said.
Witnesses described a light-colored Mazda Tribute SUV leaving the scene and originally said the driver was a middle-aged woman. One witness described seeing a Ford Explorer SUV strike the McKees. He said the driver stopped 20 yards away and stepped out, then got back in the vehicle and drove off.
Investigators found vehicle shards in the roadway that were identified as coming from a 2008 to 2011 Mazda Tribute. Surveillance footage from the area showed a speeding SUV heading south, so police focused their search on areas around Lake Worth. They eventually traced the vehicle shards to a Mazda owned by Horsford, who did not answer his phone.
During a visit to Horsford’s home in the 1800 block of North O Street, police purportedly found the door unlocked and the house empty. Neighbors said they hadn’t seen Horsford for several weeks. Police didn’t find anyone in the house but they found a Mazda Tribute in the garage with damage consistent with the fatal crash.
Police learned that a few days after the crash, Horsford told his employer at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront that he’d been in “a very bad accident.” George Isaac, the hotel manager, reportedly told Horsford to get an attorney and that was the last time he saw him. Horsford later left the country and quit his job at the hotel by mail.
Investigators discovered Horsford left the country on December 7 and was scheduled to return on December 23, but did not. It is unclear how police managed to track Horsford down and arrest him on Monday.
Leaving the scene of an accident or a hit-and-run is a serious criminal traffic violation. State law requires anyone involved in an accident to provide their name, address, driver’s license, and car registration to the other party. If the accident resulted in an injury or death to another person, then you have an additional duty to provide reasonable assistance to the victim by seeking medical help.
