Broward County Assistant State Attorney Alim Babayev was arrested June 11 for allegedly causing an accident while under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash.
Babayev, 37, was charged with DUI involving property damage and leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage. He was booked into Broward County Jail and was later released. It is unclear if he has acquired the services of an attorney.
According to the arrest report, the accident Babayev allegedly caused occurred at around 6:45 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 just north of Broward Boulevard. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper noticed two damaged cars parked on the right shoulder. He pulled over to investigate and was told by the drivers that their cars had been struck by a white vehicle.
A witness reportedly called the police and followed the hit-and-run driver, who abandoned his vehicle on the I-95 and started walking up the highway. When the witness stopped, the driver walked up to his vehicle and begged him to let him in, according to the report.
Troopers apprehended the driver and identified him as Babayev. They reported that he appeared impaired and his breath had a strong odor of an alcohol. His shirt was stained with vomit and his pants were torn.
Babayev allegedly told the troopers that he wasn’t involved in the crash on I-95 even though his vehicle was damaged. He refused to take a field sobriety exercise, the report said. He was then arrested and taken to jail.
Sources say Babayev works in the Broward County State Attorney’s Office felony trial unit. He has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case.
“Our office will ask the governor to assign this case to another state attorney’s office to avoid any potential appearance of a conflict of interest,” a spokesperson for the Broward County State Attorney’s Office said, according to Local 10 News. “After the case is concluded, the state attorney and chief assistant state attorney will review the matter and make a decision regarding the future employment of the accused person.”
Another DUI incident involving a state employee was reported in Palm Beach County last week. Palm Beach County corrections deputy Stephen Bailey was arrested on May 26 after allegedly causing a car crash on I-95.
Bailey, 29, was charged with a DUI and resisting an officer. He has since been released from jail. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to the arrest report, the alleged incident occurred on the morning of May 26 in the northbound lanes of I-95 in suburban Boca Raton. No further details are available.
Troopers who arrived at the scene reported that Bailey had bloodshot and glassy eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of alcohol was emanating from his breath. He was also unsteady on his feet, the report indicates.
Bailey has been placed on paid administrative leave until the charges are resolved.
