Christopher Mohr of Weston, Florida, was fatally struck in a hit-and-run accident early on New Year’s Day. He is survived by his wife of 26 years and two children. Investigators are still searching for the driver and urge anyone with information to come forward.

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office, Mohr, 50, was cycling a mile east of the Indian Trace Intersection on a bike lane on State Road 84 some time after 7:30 a.m. He was reportedly struck from behind by a driver who fled the scene of the accident. Fire rescue workers rushed Mohr to Broward Health Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

The victim’s widow, Robin Mohr, told news sources that her husband, an avid biker, had taken a route he had ridden a “hundreds of times before.” He had been training for a 100-mile race taking place next week and had taken all the necessary precautions before he set out, like wearing a bike helmet. When her husband didn’t come home she got worried and decided to go out and look for him. Police later confirmed her worst fears.

The hit-and-run driver is believed to have been driving a white vehicle of an unknown but older make. Police are searching for a car that fits the description that has damage on the windshield and passenger-side headlight. A vehicle matching the description was reportedly found at a nearby shopping center yesterday, but detectives said it’s too early to tell whether it’s the one responsible for the crash.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the number of hit-and-run crashes in Florida has remained steady over the years. In 2015, over 92,000 hit-and-run crashes were reported in the state. The majority of these crashes (more than 80 percent) usually only result in property damage, but more than 180 people were killed in such crashes in 2015.

Under Florida Law, a driver involved in a crash MUST stop. Leaving the scene makes the situation worse. A hit-and-run charge is a felony and if it results in a death, the responsible driver faces a minimum sentence of four years in prison.
