Stephen Burns of North Miami Beach, Florida was arrested on July 2 for his alleged involvement in the DUI car crash that led to the death of Terance Martees Young of Hollywood.
Burns, 24, is charged with DUI, vehicular homicide, and DUI causing death. He was ordered held on $120,000 bond. If he posts bail and is released before trial, he must report to court every month and undergo random drug testing. He also can’t apply for a passport.
According to the arrest report, the alleged crash occurred at 4:30 a.m. on April 3, 2016, on an intersection in Pompano Beach.
Before the crash, Burns had reportedly split a $78 bill with two friends at a North Miami Bar. They went to another bar, where they allegedly stayed until 4 a.m. Half an hour later, Burns was driving east on East Sample Road at 90 mph, where the posted speed limit is 45 mph. Young, 30, was driving south on North Federal Highway when he collided with Burns’ vehicle at an intersection.
The collision was reportedly so violent, it tore Young’s vehicle in half. Burns’ vehicle rolled over and stopped 135 feet away from the crash site. Young was severely injured in the crash and he died in a hospice a year later, the report said. The medical examiner’s office ruled his death was caused by complications from blunt head trauma.
Burns’ blood alcohol content after the crash was .20, which is more than twice the legal limit. When interviewed by police, Burns said he was looking for gas and he thought he was traveling 40 miles south on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami.
“Obviously it’s going to be a litigated case. It’s very unfortunate outcome, but we don’t believe our client is responsible for the accident,” Burns’ attorney, Scott A. Levine, told the press.
Another DUI car crash was reported in Miami last week. Axel Rojas Hernandez of Miami, Florida was arrested on June 25 for his allegedly involvement in a DUI car crash that damaged two parked vehicles.
Hernandez, 21, is being charged with DUI causing property damage and DUI. It is unclear if has acquired an attorney.
According to the arrest report, the alleged crash occurred just before 4 a.m. on June 25 in the 500 block of 15th Street. Hernandez, who was driving with three passengers, reportedly crashed his vehicle into two parked cars. No one was seriously injured in the accident.
When questioned by deputies, Hernandez had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol. A deputy described his behavior as “incoherent,” the report said. Hernandez failed field sobriety exercises and his blood alcohol content was 0.12, sources indicate.
