DEA agent Brendan Darcangelo of Palm Beach County, Florida has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a DUI car crash that damaged another vehicle and injured two people.
Darcangelo faces charges of driving under the influence with property damage and driving under the influence with injury to others. It is unclear if he has acquired the services of an attorney.
According to the police report, the alleged crash occurred on the night of December 2 at a red light at S. Jog Road and Olive Tree Boulevard in Greenacres. Darcangelo failed to stop his car at the red light and rear-ended another vehicle. The two people in the vehicle he rear-ended were hospitalized with minor injuries, records show.
Police officers who arrived at the scene reported that Darcangelo’s eyes were glassy, his breath smelled of alcohol, his speech slurred, and he was unsteady on his feet. He refused to submit to a breathalyzer test on the scene, the report said.
The Miami field office of the DEA has confirmed that Darcangelo is an agent in South Florida, but would not comment further.
Another DUI case was reported in Coral Springs last week. Firefighter Sean Marlin turned himself in on December 5 for his role in a DUI crash that occurred last March and caused the death of John Hawkins.
Marlin is charged with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter. His bond was set at $156,000. If he gets out on bond, he’ll have to wear a GPS monitor, undergo random drug testing, and not consume drugs or alcohol.
According to the arrest report, the alleged incident occurred on the Florida Turnpike on St. Patrick’s Day. Hawkins and his wife Angela and two friends were riding motorcycles north on the turnpike when they pulled over briefly. Marlin veered off the road and struck them, the report said.
Marlin had reportedly consumed several alcoholic beverages with his co-workers at a St. Patrick’s Day festival in Delray Beach. He dozed off “several times” while driving home from the festival before he struck a group of motorcycles that had stopped on the outside shoulder of the turnpike, the report said.
During Marlin’s bond hearing, the prosecutor said Marlin showed signs of impairment and had a blood alcohol level of .11, which is over the legal limit in the state of Florida. Marlin reportedly had bloodshot eyes and the odor of alcohol on his breath.
