Diego Salazar Uribe of Hollywood, Florida was arrested on March 21 for allegedly running over Joseph Curtis after he failed to pay his bill at a bar in Hallandale Beach. Curtis, 53, who was a bouncer at the bar, suffered serious injuries and died on April 7, the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed on Friday.
Uribe, 43, was charged with attempted murder but he could face additional charges because of Curtis’ death. He remains held in lieu of a $150,000 bond. The press did not name an attorney for Uribe.
According to the arrest report, the incident took place at Ocean’s 11 Sports Lounge & Grill in Hallandale Beach. Uribe reportedly opened a tab at the bar with his debit card, but the card was declined when he tried to pay his bill. He was escorted to his car by Curtis, who was the bouncer on shift, to receive another form of payment.
When Uribe reached his van, he allegedly jumped inside attempted to get away. Witnesses reportedly saw Curtis run up to the driver’s side of the vehicle, yelling at Uribe to stop. He backed away from the moving car and pushed a bystander out of harm’s way before he was hit by the front bumper. Uribe then allegedly ran over the bouncer’s body “while he was lying in the middle of the inside lane of traffic,” the arrest report said.
Witnesses called 911 and the bystander Curtis shoved out of the way was reportedly found performing CPR on him when paramedics arrived. Curtis was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital. He suffered severe injuries, including a fractured vertebra, a lacerated kidney, and internal bleeding. He had to be placed in a medically induced coma.
Doctors weren’t sure if Curtis would be able to walk again, prosecutor Eric Linder told a Judge Michael Davis during a court hearing he;d for Uribe on March 21. Curtis remained in grave condition until his death on April 7.
Uribe reportedly told investigators that he tried to drive away because he had gotten into an argument with Curtis about his unpaid bar tab.
Court records show that this is not the first time he has attempted to skip out on his bill. In September last year, he was arrested for reportedly trying to defraud the bartender at Whiskey Tango Bar in Hollywood by refusing to pay for a beer and an order of mozzarella sticks. A few months later, he was arrested at Flanigan’s Seafood Bar in Hallandale Beach after he reportedly couldn’t pay his $32 bill. He pleaded no contest in both cases and adjudication was withheld.
