Adrian Perez of Davie, Florida was arrested on August 11 for his alleged involvement in a July hit-and-run accident that severely injured Michelle Holguin.
Perez, 21, turned himself in on Friday night and faces charges for leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury and tampering with or fabricating evidence. He remains in police custody and will be placed on house arrest if he manages to post bail. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to the police report, the alleged accident occurred just after midnight on July 15 along West Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Holguin, 53, was cycling home from work when she was struck by a driver who failed to stop and administer aid. She was found unconscious on the road with severe injuries and reportedly remains in a medically-induced coma.
Surveillance footage from a Mobil station at 12580 West Sunrise Boulevard reportedly shows the hit-and-run driver, who investigators believe is Perez, getting out of a Nissan Sentra to check the damage on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Perez allegedly texted a friend right after the crash and said he struck and killed a deer, and then went home and checked online for news stories about hit-and-run accidents in the area, the report said. Perez’s mother appeared in bond court on Saturday and reportedly begged Judge Jill Levy to release her son, but the judge refused.
“He got out of the car, saw the damage, went to a gas station and texted his friend . . . that he hit a deer, and the deer died,” Judge Levy said. “After that, your son looked online to try and get his windshield replaced.”
Another hit-and-run arrest was reported in Fort Lauderdale last week. Regina Goodrich of Coral Springs, Florida turned herself in on Thursday to face charges for her alleged involvement in a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed Miguel Soler.
Goodrich, 25, is charged with failure to remain at an accident involving death. She was released on $70,000 bond and ordered to wear a GPS monitor.
According to the police report, the hit-and-run crash occurred on July 2 on East Las Olas Boulevard. Soler was driving west with his family when he stopped to take a picture next to the “Welcome to Fort Lauderdale Beach” sign. As he was reentering his vehicle, he was run over by a driver who was also going west. Soler died at Broward Health Medical Center. The driver who struck him did not stop.
Police found the suspected hit-run vehicle about 10 blocks away from scene of the accident in Tarpon Drive. The vehicle, a 2009 Ford Escape, reportedly belongs to Goodrich’s father.
During Goodrich’s hearing on Thursday, the prosecution said several witnesses saw her drinking with her friends for hours before the fatal accident. Her friends reportedly suggested they hire Uber but Goodrich refused and insisted on driving because she was the designated driver. Goodrich’s friends told police that she refused to stop after she struck Soler and later became very upset and threatened to commit suicide.
