Mariam Coulibaly of North Miami, Florida is accused of driving drunk with a suspended license and running over and killing three teenage boys.
Coulibaly, 31, was charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter and three counts of DUI manslaughter. It is unclear if she has acquired the services of an attorney.
According to the North Miami Police Department, the alleged fatal crash occurred at around 5:22 a.m. May 25 at NE 125th Street and 13th Place in North Miami. Coulibaly had reportedly left her workplace at 5 a.m. and had allegedly been drinking for most of the night.
The three teenagers, identified as Gedeon Desir, 13; Lens Desir, 15; and Richecarde Duman, 17, were walking to a local bus stop to catch a bus with their teammates for a soccer tournament in Weston. The boys were members of the Little Haiti FC Soccer Club.
As the three boys were waiting for the bus, Coulibaly reportedly drove an SUV onto the sidewalk at a high rate of speed and struck them. The trio died at the scene. Coulibaly was also injured in the crash and was transported to Aventura Hospital and Medical Center for treatment.
Police said Coulibaly smelled of alcohol and she allegedly admitted to hospital staff that she had been partying. An initial toxicology report purportedly showed that her blood alcohol content was almost twice the legal limit.
“There is no such thing as a DUI accident,” said Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. “Every DUI incident is a crime, an act undertaken by an individual who could have chosen not to drink and drive but instead decided to start the car and go. The results are always terrible as the loss of these three fine young men so vividly displays.”
Coulibaly will be booked into jail once she is well enough to be released from the hospital. Records show she has been cited for 42 traffic traffic violations since 2018 in Miami-Dade County and Broward County, including speeding, driving on a suspended license, and at least seven previous car crashes.
