Montana Fishburne, the estranged daughter of Hollywood actor Laurence Fishburne, was arrested on March 11 for allegedly crashing her vehicle into a Range Rover on I-95 while under the influence. She is being charged with a DUI, DUI with property damage, and DUI with a blood alcohol reading of .15 or higher. She was released some hours later from Broward County Sheriff’s Office jail on a $2,500 bond. It is unclear if she has entered a plea or hired an attorney.
According to the arrest report, Fishburne, 25, was allegedly driving a 2016 Toyota Corolla along I-25 near her home in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday morning when the crash occurred. Fishburne reportedly struck a Range Rover that had slowed down to avoid debris on the highway. Her vehicle sustained serious damage, but she, her passenger, and the driver of the vehicle she crashed into were unhurt.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper who arrived on the scene reported that Fishburne had a strong smell of alcohol on her breath. The trooper also claimed to have seen an open wine bottle on the floor of Fishburne’s vehicle and a purple liquid that smelled like alcohol was splashed on the two front seats.
The FHP trooper wrote in his report that Fishburne appeared “incoherent” as she tried to walk. She also purportedly squatted and urinated on the side of the highway while police and rescue crews cleared up the accident.
At the station, Fishburne reportedly blew .177 and .181 during a breath test, which is more than twice the legal limit for the state of Florida. Her arrest report also purportedly shows that she failed a series of field sobriety tests. News sources could not reach her for comment.
This is the second high-profile DUI arrest reported in the past week. On March 12, Hollywood City Attorney Jerffrey Sheffel was also arrested on DUI charges after he reportedly crashed his 1998 Lexus onto a sidewalk on the Hollywood Boulevard bridge.
Sheffel, 57, was charged with DUI with alcohol, DUI with damage to property, and a citation for driving on a sidewalk. He was released on Monday after posting a $1,500 bond.
According to the press, the incident occurred before 6 p.m. on Sunday. Sheffel reportedly crashed his Lexus between a concrete wall and an inner guard rail along the bridge. He was forced to climb out of the driver’s side window to get out of the car.
Sheffel reportedly told the first office to arrive on the that he had drunk “too many beers” and had “too much to drink.” The report filed by the arresting officer says he smelled of alcohol, appeared confused, and had watery eyes. He declined to take a breath test twice, meaning he could have his driver’s license suspended for a year, and failed a series of voluntary field sobriety tests.
Several Hollywood city officials, including Mayor Josh Levy, former Mayor Peter Bober, and Commisioiner Debra Case have publicly announced their support for Sheffel, saying that they hope he won’t lose his job over the DUI charge.
