Oscar Roberto Acevedo of Miami-Dade, Florida was arrested on February 15 for allegedly causing a DUI crash that led to the death of Samuel Anthony Ruiz Jr. of Coral Springs and injured four of his friends.
Acevedo, 29, faces several charges including DUI causing death, DUI causing serious bodily injury, and reckless driving. He is being held in lieu of a $99,000 bond. If released, a judge has ordered him not to drive or take alcohol or other controlled substances.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on March 13 last year south of Oakland Park Boulevard on the northbound side of the Sawgrass Expressway. Acevedo was reportedly driving a 2006 Cadillac STS at speeds over 100 mph while under the influence when he crashed into a 1999 Honda CR-V.
Ruiz, 19, was a passenger in the Honda. The vehicle’s driver was going below the expressway’s 65 mph speed limit because he was accompanying another vehicle that had a worn spare tire. The two vehicles collectively carried ten people from the Coral Springs area, including Ruiz. They were reportedly going home after a night out in the city.
Acevedo purportedly crashed into the back of the Honda while driving at 100.73 mph. The impact caused the Honda to flip, hit a guard rail, and catch fire. Ruiz, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. He died at the scene of the crash.
The other four passengers, who have not been identified by news sources, suffered varying injuries. One of them broke a pelvis and suffered second-degree burns, another had a serious brain injury and some burns, and the other two had minor injuries.
Investigators said Acevedo’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was almost twice the legal limit in the state of Florida. Drivers with a BAC that’s above Florida’s legal limit can be held liable for the cost of injuries caused by a crash. If there’s a death, the driver can be held liable in a wrongful death suit in addition to probation, fines, and other penalties.
