Sandra Duval of Tamarac, Florida was arrested on September 13 for allegedly causing a car crash while under the influence that led to the death of Gerard Allard.
Duval, 34, is charged with vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter while impaired, DUI property damage, and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage. She was ordered held without bond until she appears before her trial judge. It is unclear if she has an attorney.
According to the arrest report, the alleged car crash occurred on March 24 in the 6800 block of NW 39th Avenue in Coconut Creek. Allard, 73, was riding a bicycle along a sidewalk when someone driving a yellow Jeep Renegade drove on the sidewalk and struck him before crashing into a tree. Allard suffered serious injuries and died a week later.
The driver of the Jeep was identified as Duval. Her vehicle had first struck two cars in the parking lot of the Adios Golf Club, but Duval didn’t stop to tell the owners, investigators said. A witness told police that they saw the Jeep speeding along NW 39th Avenue and run a red light at West Hillsboro Boulevard.
Duval suffered minor injuries from her collision with the tree and was taken to Broward Health North for treatment. She purportedly fell asleep several times while in the trauma room. She allegedly admitted to the crashes at the golf club and that she hit a cyclist.
Duval also told police she had used heroine 12 hours before the crash, the report said. The results from a test of her blood sample reportedly revealed she was under the influence of fentanyl and cocaine at the time of the crash.
Another DUI manslaughter case was reported earlier this month. Jason K. Carter of Wellington, Florida was arrested for his allegedly involvement in a DUI car crash that killed John J. Stermer of Washington.
Carter, 47, is charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, DUI causing serious bodily injury, and DUI manslaughter. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to the police report, the incident occurred during the early hours of December 23, 2017. Carter was driving at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended a vehicle driven by Miguel Portillo. The impact made both cars spin out of control and Portillo’s vehicle struck Stermer, 74, who was walking on the sidewalk. Stermer was died at the scene of the crash. Portillo suffered serious injuries but is reportedly recovering. Carter sustained minor injuries.
The exact details of Carter’s arrest have not been made available, but he was reportedly arrested in Michigan and is awaiting extradition to Florida.
