The Polk County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a Socrum Loop Elementary teacher for allegedly driving while under the influence.
Robin Eileen Ramos, 40, was charged with one count of DUI. She was taken to Polk County Jail. It is unclear if she has acquired the services of an attorney.
According to the arrest affidavit, at approximately 1:25 a.m. on May 8, deputies noticed a 2014 Nissan Sentra swerving in and out of its lane at the intersection of Kathleen Road and Central Avenue NW. The deputies conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as Ramos.
When questioned by the deputies, Ramos reportedly told them that she hadn’t had any alcohol, but she had taken a Xanax before driving. The deputies asked if her prescription included a warning about avoiding operating heavy machinery after taking it, and she told them she didn’t know but should “probably look into that,” according to the affidavit.
The deputies noted that Ramos stumbled when she walked, and she swayed and was unsteady on her feet while standing still. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she failed a field sobriety exercise, according to the arrest report.
Ramos was arrested and taken to Polk County Jail, where she submitted to a breath test. The test didn’t show the presence of any alcohol, the report states. She refused to submit a urine sample to check for the presence of any controlled substances in her body, police said.
After her arrest, Ramos reportedly told police that she was a teacher at Kathleen Elementary School. However, she later told detention deputies that she is a teacher at Socrum Loop Elementary. Sources indicate that she is a 5th grade teacher at the school.
Another DUI arrest was reported in Largo last week. 27-year-old Britney Lynn Crawford was arrested for her alleged involvement in a wrong-way car crash that killed one person and injured three others.
Crawford was arrested and charged with DUI causing serious injury, DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and child neglect. She was held in lieu of $70,000 and has since bonded out of jail. The press did not name an attorney for her.
According to the arrest affidavit, the alleged crash occurred at around 2:15 a.m. on May 3 along U.S. 19. Crawford is accused of crashing her Nissan Murano head-on into another vehicle while speeding south in the northbound lanes.
A passenger in the vehicle she struck was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver and a 10-year-old child in the back suffered serious injuries and were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions are unknown.
Police found Crawford unconscious in her car and rushed her to a hospital, the affidavit states. She purportedly had a child in the vehicle who was hospitalized for precautionary reasons. Crawford’s blood alcohol content was found to be .202, which is more than twice the legal limit for driving in Florida.
Drunk driving is a serious offense in Florida that carries stiff penalties. Anyone facing a DUI charge should immediately consult an attorney who can review the facts and build an aggressive defense.
