Jeffery Scott Kaiser of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was killed on Wednesday in a car crash involving a semi-trailer truck driven by Trevor Roy Thompson of Margate.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when Kaiser, 26, tried to merge his Nissan Sentra onto one of the northbound lanes on Interstate 95 near Glades Road. Kaiser’s vehicle was struck on the right side and sent spinning into a concrete barrier wall, instantly killing him.
Thompson, 70, reportedly told police that he saw the Nissan’s brake lights and turn signal before the car merged into his path, but he was unable to avoid crashing into Kaiser. Thompson was uninjured by the accident.
Florida Highway Patrol had to shut down three northbound lanes on Interstate 95 that approach Glades Road for most of the morning. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Another car crash that caused a fatality was reported over a week ago involving an “elderly male driver” on the 3700 block of Washington Street on November 29. The accident led to the death of Cynthia Schafer and severely injured two others.
Schafer, 59, and the two others were standing at a bus stop in Hollywood when an SUV driven by an unidentified male crashed into them. All four, including the driver, were hospitalized. Schafer died the following day. The extent of the injuries of the other victims is unknown and police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
Data from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reveals Florida has had 357,651 crashes in 2016. 150,203 caused injuries and 2,714 crashes led to fatalities. These statistics are a good reminder of how dangerous Florida’s roadways can be.
