June Naranjo of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was struck by two vehicles while crossing a street to her workplace some time after 6 a.m. on December 14. She was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where she was in critical condition for days after the accident. She died on Monday.
According to news sources, the accident occurred on a street in 700 North Pine Island Road in Plantation. Naranjo, 66, was walking on her usual route to Westside Regional Medical Center Emergency, where she worked as a respiratory therapist for 30 years.
She was hit by the first driver who got out and tried to help her, but a second vehicle came in from the south and struck her just a few minutes later, causing serious injuries. The second driver, who is believed to have been driving a beige or tan Ford SUV, did not stop. Police said criminal charges are pending for the driver who fled the scene.
Naranjo’s sisters, Kim Jennett and Becky Johnson, spoke to news sources and admonished the second driver for leaving the scene of the accident. They urged whoever it was to turn themselves in. “You know, I know in my heart that God knows where you are,” said Johnson.
Another fatal accident involving multiple vehicles was reported two days later on the northbound side of Interstate 95. Willie Hill of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was hit by three vehicles in the early hours of December 16 while driving a scooter.
According to a report from Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the accident occurred on the northbound side of the interstate at Stirling Road through Dania Beach. Hill, 47, was struck from behind by Fred Alcius.
The impact ejected Hill off his scooter and caused him to crash into a truck driven by William Garcia, and then a Volvo driven by William Henao. Hill died on the scene.
The FHP report said the three drivers were uninjured. The cause of the crash is still under investigation and citations have not been issued to any of the drivers. Hill’s speed at the time of the accident is unknown, but he was reportedly not wearing a helmet.
