Laszlo Aspirany of Hallandale Beach, Florida was arrested on August 29 for his alleged involvement in a DUI accident that damaged four cars and caused the death of Susana Alvarez de Lima of Hallandale Beach.
Aspirany, 69, is charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI causing injury, and DUI causing damage to property. He was ordered held on $155,000. If he manages to bond out of jail, he is not to drive without judicial permission and he must surrender his passport.
According to the arrest report, the alleged car crash occurred at 9 a.m. on May 10 on 720 S. Federal Highway near Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach. Aspirany was reportedly pulling out of the parking lot of the Royal Palm mobile home park in a white sedan when he suddenly stopped in the middle of the road.
A vehicle swerved to avoid Aspirany’s vehicle, but he reportedly accelerated and crashed into it, according to the report. Aspirany’s sedan then went over the curb and struck Alvarez de Lima, 67, who fell backward onto the hood of the car. Aspirany was still accelerating with Alvarez de Lima on the hood when he crashed into three more cars.
The drivers of one of the vehicles, who was identified as Gerald Raymon, suffered serious injuries, investigators said. Alvarez de Lima suffered “extensive traumatic injuries” and was taken to a hospital, where she died.
According to traffic homicide prosecutor Scott Strauss, two witnesses saw Aspirany attempt to cover his tracks after the crash.
“They immediately observed Mr. Aspirany spraying himself with cologne in an attempt to cover up or disguise the fact that he was drinking,” Strauss said during a court hearing Thursday, according to the Sun Sentinel. “Mr. Aspirany walks across the street in an attempt to blend in and further disguise himself from being involved in the crash.”
Aspirany reportedly tried to blend into the crowd of onlookers before crossing the highway towards his residency at the Royal Palm mobile home park. When witnesses pointed him out to police officers, Aspirany allegedly fell to the ground and claimed to have chest pains. He was transported to a hospital as a precaution, investigators said.
“Mr. Aspirany was extremely uncooperative with paramedics and with law enforcement,” Straus said. “When he was transported to Aventura Hospital his story, in terms of what happened the morning of the crash, changed several times.”
A blood sample taken at the hospital revealed that Aspirany had a blood alcohol level of .15, which is almost double the legal limit of .08, the arrest report said. While the investigation continued, Aspirany purportedly bought a one-way ticket to Hungary, but his family persuaded him to remain in Florida.
