Michael Boatwright of Fort Lauderdale, Florida has been arrested as the second suspect in the June 18 shooting death of Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, better known as rapper XXXTentacion.
Boatwright, 22, was already in Broward County Jail following his arrest on July 5 on unrelated charges of cocaine possession with intent to sell and misdemeanor marijuana possession. At the time of his arrest, Boatwright was on probation until April 2019 for battery and drug charges from November 2013. He is now charged with first-degree murder in addition to violation of probation for the July 5 charges. The press did not name an attorney for him.
According to the arrest report, BSO had a DNA search warrant out for Boatwright. A deputy used a potential window tint violation to stop Boatwright’s Lexus. No tint violation ticket was issued, but Boatwright reportedly dropped a marijuana cigarette he was rolling on his lap when he stepped out of the vehicle. The deputy also allegedly found a plastic bag containing 6 grams of crack cocaine, broken up for retail sale, inside Boatwright’s pants.
Boatwright was named as one of the two suspected gunmen. His arrest follows that of Dedrick Devonshay Williams of Pompano Beach a week after Onfroy’s murder. Williams, 22, was also charged with first-degree murder as well as violating parole for an unrelated crime.
The alleged shooting occurred at around 4 p.m. on June 18 outside Riva Motorsports in Deerfield Beach. Onfroy was sitting inside his car when two gunmen approached and shot him in an apparent robbery attempt, authorities said. Onfroy was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Onfroy’s attorney told the press that investigators told him his client had visited a bank before the shooting and likely withdrew money to buy a motorcycle at Riva Motorsports.
Investigators have not released any details about how they identified Boatwright and Williams as the gunmen, but they released surveillance footage from outside Riva Motorsports. It shows a “heavy set” man in a black shirt and a man wearing orange sandals committing the robbery. The suspects escaped in an SUV after the shooting, indicating that a third person was on the robbery team as a driver.
Police are looking for a third man, identified as Robert Allen, as a person of interest in the shooting. He is allegedly the “heavy set” black man in the surveillance video.
Onfroy was a rising hiphop star with a slew of Billboard hits. He released a No. 1 single last year and a chart-topping album in March 2018. His career was mired in controversy. He was jailed in 2016 for allegedly attacking his pregnant girlfriend and was release from house arrest earlier this year to promote his new album. At the time of his death, Onfroy was facing 15 felony charges.
